Have you every heard the saying, “it takes approximately 21 days to change a habit?”

Do you believe it? Whether you do or you don’t you may find this article in the Huffington Post interesting and perhaps it will give you a different perspective.

It states, “on average, it takes more than two months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. And how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances.

In other words, if you want to set your expectations appropriately, the truth is that it will probably take you anywhere from two months to eight months to build a new behavior into your life — not 21 days.

Interestingly, the researchers also found that “missing one opportunity to perform the behavior did not materially affect the habit formation process.” In other words, it doesn’t matter if you mess up every now and then. Building better habits is not an all-or-nothing process.” You can read the rest of the article here.

Hmmm, makes sense to me. No wonder I can give up sugar for a month and think I’ve kicked it, only to fall back into it’s sugary trap so easily!

I think this article serves as a great reminder for us, especially this time of year. You may not be a New Year’s resolution kind of person, I know I’m not. However, I do enjoy starting the New Year trying something new and inspiring.

You may remember I wrote a post last year about this time entitled “What’s Your Word for the Year?” My Word last year was Intentional. I found that about half way through the year my Word sort of fell off my radar screen. How about you? How did you do with your Word throughout the whole year?

So, this year I’m choosing the Word RENEW. And I’m incorporating a few words to go along with it. Fun, Lighthearted, and Joy. AND, to help keep me inspired throughout the 66 days and beyond, I’ve joined an Art Journaling Group.

Here’s a picture of the beginning stages of the cover of my journal. I’ll post the finished project soon.

What Word did you choose this year? How are you planning to stay inspired throughout your 66 days and beyond?

I would love to hear your ideas. Comment below or go to my facebook page and comment.

Blessings to you this year! I look forward to hearing how God is showing up in your life!
